How to add and subtract time

Work from the smallest unit up. Add the seconds and carry every 60 into minutes; add the minutes and carry every 60 into hours. To subtract, borrow the other way. The calculator keeps a running total as you type.

total = Σ (± (hours × 3600 + minutes × 60 + seconds)), shown as h:mm:ss, decimal hours, and total minutes.

Examples

  • 3 client tasks of 1:15, 0:45 and 2:05 → 4:05 (4.08 hours) to bill.
  • A 45-minute recording minus a 6:30 intro and a 3:15 outro → 35:15 of main content.
  • Total practice this week: 0:40 + 0:55 + 1:10 + 0:30 → 3:15.

Frequently asked questions

How do I add hours and minutes together?
Add the minutes; every 60 minutes carries into an hour. 2h 45m + 1h 30m = 3h 75m = 4h 15m. This calculator carries the minutes and seconds for you.
How is this different from the Hours Worked Calculator?
The Hours Worked Calculator finds the time between two clock times, like 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM. This tool adds and subtracts durations — 2:45 plus 1:30 minus 0:20 — with no start or end time involved.
Can the result be negative?
Yes. If you subtract more time than you add, the result is shown with a minus sign.
What can I use it for?
Totalling billable time, adding up study or practice sessions, working out cooking or baking timings, editing and render times, or race and lap splits.
