The rule

decimal hours = whole hours + (minutes ÷ 60)
minutes = (decimal hours − whole hours) × 60

The frequent error is treating minutes as the decimal directly: 7 hours 45 minutes is 7.75, not 7.45.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert minutes to decimal hours?
Divide the minutes by 60. 15 ÷ 60 = 0.25, 30 ÷ 60 = 0.5, 45 ÷ 60 = 0.75. So 7 hours 45 minutes is 7.75 hours — a common mistake is to write 7.45.
How do I convert decimal hours back to minutes?
Multiply the decimal part by 60. 0.6 × 60 = 36, so 8.6 hours is 8 hours 36 minutes. Enter a decimal like 8.6 above and the calculator shows the hours and minutes.
Why does payroll use decimal hours?
Pay is rate × hours, and that multiplication only works cleanly with decimals. $20 × 7.75 = $155.00. With 7:45 you'd have to convert first anyway.
Can I convert a whole timesheet at once?
Yes — paste one time per line (7:45, 8:15, 6:30 …) into the bulk box and it returns a decimal for each line plus the total.
