Work Hours
Time Card Calculator
Enter your start and end times for each day of the week, subtract lunch and unpaid breaks, and get your total hours, overtime split, and estimated gross pay. Overnight shifts are handled automatically.
Assumptions this calculator makes
- A day whose end time is at or before its start time is treated as an overnight shift (+24h), unless start and end are identical (then it's flagged as an error).
- Only unpaid breaks are subtracted. Paid breaks remain in worked time.
- Overtime is applied to the weekly total (and, for California, to each day) using the rule you select. The California 7th-consecutive-day rule is not applied.
- Gross pay is before tax and other deductions. Use the Paycheck Calculator for take-home pay.
How to fill out the time card
Enter the time you clocked in and out for each day, in whatever format is natural to you. Put your unpaid lunch in the break column in minutes. The calculator updates as you type: each day shows hours and minutes plus decimal hours, and the week rolls up into a total, an overtime split, and — if you enter an hourly rate — estimated gross pay.
The formula
For each day:
worked minutes = (end − start, +24h if overnight) − unpaid break
For the week, with the US federal rule:
regular hours = min(total, 40)
overtime hours = max(0, total − 40)
gross pay = regular × rate + overtime × rate × 1.5
Other rules change the threshold (Ontario uses 44 hours) or add a daily test (California: 1.5× after 8 hours in a day, 2× after 12). See how overtime pay is calculated for the details and the jurisdictions.
Example
You work 8:00 AM–4:30 PM Monday to Thursday with a 30-minute lunch, and 7:00 PM–3:00 AM Friday into Saturday (also 30 minutes). That's 8.0 hours × 4 = 32 hours, plus an 7.5-hour overnight Friday shift = 39.5 hours. At $22/hour with the federal rule, no overtime applies and gross pay is $869.00.
When to use a different tool
- Just one shift to add up? Use the Hours Worked Calculator.
- Working from raw clock-in/out punches for payroll? The Time Clock Calculator is punch-focused and decimal-first.
- Only need the overtime pay math? The Overtime Calculator takes regular and overtime hours directly.
