How Many Work Hours Are in a Year?
A standard full-time work year is 2,080 hours: 40 hours a week × 52 weeks. That is the figure used to convert salaries to hourly rates and to budget headcount. But the hours you actually work are usually fewer, and the number of working days shifts from year to year.

Working days by year
Count only Monday–Friday dates and the total moves between roughly 260 and 262, depending on how weekends fall and whether it is a leap year. Public holidays (which vary by country) reduce it further.

hours worked = 2,080 − (PTO days + holidays) × hours per workday
With 15 vacation days and 10 public holidays at 8 hours each, that is 2,080 − 200 = 1,880 hours. Part-time and compressed schedules change the starting figure.

Why it matters
- Salary comparisons: a job expecting 45-hour weeks has a lower real hourly rate than one at 40.
- Contractor rates: contractors have no paid time off, so they need a higher rate to match an equivalent salary.
- Project planning: a full-time employee provides roughly 1,850–1,900 productive hours a year, not 2,080.
