How Many Work Hours Are in a Year?
A standard full-time work year is 2,080 hours: 40 hours a week × 52 weeks. That is the figure used to convert salaries to hourly rates and to plan headcount. But the hours you actually work are usually fewer, and the number of working days shifts from year to year.

The 2,087-hour version
The US federal government uses 2,087 hours as its official work-year divisor. It is the average once you account for the fact that the calendar repeats on a 28-year cycle with a mix of 260, 261, and 262 weekday years. For most private-sector purposes 2,080 is close enough; 2,087 matters for precise federal hourly-rate calculations.

Hours in a month, quarter, and other periods
- Month: 2,080 ÷ 12 = 173.33 hours. Individual months range from about 160 (a 20-workday month) to 184 (a 23-workday month).
- Quarter: roughly 520 hours (13 weeks × 40).
- Business days in a month: usually 20–23.
- Work weeks in a year: 52 (plus one or two extra days), which is why a biweekly payroll sometimes has a 27th paycheck.
Why it matters
- Salary comparisons: a job expecting 45-hour weeks has a lower real hourly rate than one at 40.
- Contractor rates: contractors have no paid time off, so they need a higher rate to match an equivalent salary — and they rarely bill a full 2,080 hours.
- Project planning: a full-time employee provides roughly 1,850–1,900 productive hours a year, not 2,080.
- Accrual rates: PTO that accrues "per hour worked" is based on actual hours, so it is a little under the headline entitlement.
